The large format grow bag is the workhorse of commercial mushroom production. Holding 5-6 lbs of hydrated substrate, these Satrise 0.5 micron filter patch bags are comparable to the Unicorn 14A, the most widely used commercial mushroom cultivation bag in North America. Larger substrate blocks produce significantly bigger harvests, maintain humidity better during fruiting, and support more flushes before exhaustion. For Canadian growers, these bags ship directly from Ontario with no import fees or delays.
The 0.5 micron filter patch blocks airborne contaminants including mold spores and bacteria while providing robust gas exchange for healthy colonization. The thick 3 mil polypropylene withstands extended sterilization cycles at 15 PSI without warping or weakening. At this capacity, the strong bottom seal is critical since it supports 5-6 lbs of wet substrate through mixing, handling, and weeks of incubation.
The gusseted design creates stable, rectangular blocks that stack efficiently in your fruiting room. When empty, these autoclavable grow bags fold completely flat for compact storage. During sterilization, the gusset fold creates a barrier against contamination during the cool-down period. These are the same specifications commercial farms rely on for daily production runs.
Mix your mushroom substrate at 60-65% moisture content. Fill bags with 5-6 lbs, leaving 4-5 inches of headspace. Fold the top down twice between the gussets.
Load bags upright in your autoclave or pressure cooker with the filter patch facing outward. Leave at least 1 inch between bags. Use a rack or trivet to prevent direct contact with the pot bottom. Sterilize at 15 PSI for 2-2.5 hours for these larger blocks.
Let bags cool in the sterilizer for 8-12 hours. The substrate must reach room temperature before opening. Working in clean conditions, add spawn at 10-15% of substrate weight and mix thoroughly. For liquid culture inoculation, inject through the bag or pour directly.
Seal with an impulse sealer (14-16 inch recommended), bag clamps, or heavy-duty zip ties. Incubate at species-appropriate temperatures until fully colonized, typically 2-4 weeks.
