Compare the six kits
Every kit opens the same way: cut an X, mist 2–3 times a day, wait. What differs is how long the wait is, how warm the room should be, and whether the kit needs its humidity tent. Times count from the day you open the kit and are to the first tiny mushrooms, not to a finished harvest.
| Kit | Best for | First mushrooms | Fruiting temperature | Humidity tent | Care guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Oyster | Your first kit: forgiving, fast and happy in a cool room | Usually 1–3 weeks | 10–18°C | Not needed | Open guide |
| Lion’s Mane | A dramatic kitchen harvest; dense and shaggy for searing or shredding | No fixed estimate: watch for white growth at the opening | 16–20°C | Included, and needed | Open guide |
| Pink Oyster | Colour, and warm rooms or summer growing | Usually 1–3 weeks | 18–30°C | Not needed | Open guide |
| White Oyster | Mild flavour for everyday cooking | Usually 1–3 weeks | Room temperature | Not needed | Open guide |
| Black Oyster | A firmer, meatier oyster in the pan | Usually 1–3 weeks | Room temperature | Not needed | Open guide |
| Chestnut | Patience rewarded: firm, nutty clusters that keep well | Usually 4–5 weeks; allow 4–6 | 13–18°C | Not needed | Open guide |
Room conditions change the pace. If an oyster kit is past 3 weeks or a Chestnut kit past 6 weeks with no sprouts, send us photos through the grow-kit help pages and we will help.

Different textures, colours and growing experiences. Each kit includes a colonized growing block, spray bottle and instructions. Growth and harvest size vary.
Every Nature Lion mushroom grow kit is made in our CFIA-licensed facility in Brantford, Ontario. We inoculate, incubate, and ship each kit fully colonized so it arrives ready to fruit. No sterilization, no grain spawn, no substrate mixing. Just cut the bag, mist with water, and harvest fresh gourmet mushrooms: oyster kits usually fruit 1 to 3 weeks after opening.
Our kits are available in six species: Lion's Mane, Blue Oyster, Pink Oyster, White Oyster, Black Oyster, and Chestnut. Each species has different flavour profiles, growing characteristics, and culinary uses, so there's a kit for every taste.
If you searched for the best mushroom growing kit in Canada, start with the species you want to cook. Blue Oyster is the easiest first kit, Lion's Mane is the best pick for a dramatic kitchen harvest, Pink Oyster is the most colourful, and Chestnut is a good choice if you want a firmer texture in the pan.
Growing mushrooms at home with a kit is simpler than growing herbs. When your kit arrives, the mycelium has already fully colonized the substrate inside the bag. All it needs is fresh air, humidity, and indirect light to start producing mushrooms.
For detailed growing instructions for each species, check our best mushrooms for beginners guide or our guide to getting multiple flushes from a single kit.
Grow kits are the fastest way to harvest fresh mushrooms at home. Growing from scratch with grain spawn and bulk substrate gives you larger harvests and more control, but requires sterilization equipment and some experience. If you're new to mushroom cultivation, a grow kit lets you experience the full growing cycle before investing in equipment.
Nature Lion mushroom grow kits ship free anywhere in Canada on orders of $50 or more (a flat $9.50 below that). We ship Monday through Wednesday to ensure your kit arrives fresh. Each kit is packed in insulated packaging to maintain optimal temperature during transit.
Count from the day you open the kit. Our oyster kits (Blue, Pink, White and Black) usually show their first mushrooms in 1 to 3 weeks. Chestnut averages 4 to 5 weeks, so allow 4 to 6. Lion's Mane has no fixed estimate: watch for small white growth at the opening and keep up the humidity-tent routine. Once mushrooms appear they grow quickly, and the first harvest is usually the largest.
Most kits produce 2 to 3 flushes (harvests). The first flush is typically the largest. Between flushes, soak the block in cold water for 6-12 hours to rehydrate, then resume misting. Read our complete guide to multiple flushes.
Just a spray bottle with water. No special equipment, sterile technique, or growing experience needed. Place the kit in indirect light at room temperature and mist 2-3 times daily.
Blue Oyster is the most forgiving and fastest-growing species, making it ideal for first-time growers. Lion's Mane is the most popular for its unique flavour and texture. Pink Oyster is stunning to watch grow but prefers warmer temperatures (18-30°C).

Yes. An unopened kit can be stored in the fridge (4-10°C / 39-50°F) for up to 30 days without affecting fruiting. Keep it sealed in its original packaging and out of direct sunlight. When you're ready, take it out, let it come to room temperature for an hour, then open the bag and start misting as usual.
