Start with what you are growing from

A ready-to-grow kit contains a block that the mushroom has already grown through. It needs opening and daily care. Spawn is living mushroom growth on grain or another material; you mix it into prepared straw or wood to start a new grow. Running a farm adds production planning and sales.

Before you start

Find the mushroom name and instructions on your kit or supplies. Different mushrooms and growing methods need different preparation. A boxed oyster kit is not opened in the same way as a shiitake block.

Read the opening instructions before cutting a bag or removing its wrapping.
Choose a spot away from direct sun and drying vents.
