XL Mushroom Grow Bags Canada - 0.5 Micron Filter Patch (8" x 5.5" x 25")

When maximum yield per bag is the goal, the Satrise XL filter patch bag delivers. Holding 10-12 lbs of hydrated substrate, these are comparable to the Unicorn XLS-A and are the largest size most commercial mushroom farms will ever need. Bigger blocks produce more mushrooms per flush, maintain moisture longer, support more flushes, and require fewer bags to prep, sterilize, and manage. For operations where labour efficiency matters most, the XL format is the clear choice. Ships from Ontario with no import fees.

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 8" x 5.5" x 25" (20 x 14 x 64 cm)
  • Material: 0.08 mm (3 mil) polypropylene
  • Filter: 0.5 micron filter patch
  • Capacity: approximately 10-12 lbs of substrate
  • Heat tolerance: autoclavable at 15 PSI / 121 C (250 F)
  • Design: gusseted sides, reinforced bottom seal
  • Comparable to: Unicorn XLS-A bags

What Makes These Different

The XL format demands heavy-duty construction. The 3 mil polypropylene maintains structural integrity through the extended 2.5-3 hour sterilization cycles that 10+ lb substrate blocks require. The reinforced bottom seal supports significant weight during mixing, handling, and incubation without failure. The 0.5 micron filter patch is sized for the increased gas exchange demands of large-format blocks, ensuring your mycelium gets adequate oxygen even at the centre of these substantial substrate masses.

Larger blocks generate more metabolic activity during colonization, making proper filtration critical. The 0.5 micron pore size blocks contaminants while allowing the robust air exchange that prevents CO2 buildup and ensures fast, complete colonization from edge to centre.

Ideal Uses

  • Commercial oyster production: oysters fruit aggressively from XL blocks, producing 3-4 lbs of fresh mushrooms across multiple flushes from a single bag
  • High-volume shiitake: larger blocks support browning cycles and produce bigger, more marketable mushrooms
  • Lion's mane production: substantial substrate volumes produce impressive single specimens
  • Masters mix at scale: the 50/50 hardwood sawdust and soy hull blend scales beautifully in XL format with higher total yields
  • Any operation prioritizing efficiency: fewer bags means less labour per pound of mushrooms harvested

How to Use

Fill to proper capacity

Add 10-12 lbs of prepared mushroom substrate at 60-65% moisture content. Leave 5-6 inches of headspace. Compact gently to eliminate air pockets without over-compressing.

Sterilize with extended cycles

Fold the top down between the gussets and load upright with filter patches unobstructed. Large blocks require sterilization at 15 PSI for 2.5-3 hours minimum. Ensure heat penetrates to the core. Most home pressure cookers fit only 1-2 XL bags per cycle.

Cool and inoculate

Allow 10-12 hours for cooling. Use 10-15% mushroom spawn by weight (1-1.5 lbs per bag) for reasonable colonization times. More spawn points mean faster coverage and less contamination risk. Liquid cultures also work well at this scale.

Seal and incubate

Seal with an impulse sealer (16-18 inch recommended), heavy-duty clamps, or commercial sealing equipment. Colonization takes 3-5 weeks for blocks this size depending on spawn ratio and species.
