Check whether your block is ready to start
Shiitake blocks can arrive at different stages of maturity. Your supplier should explain whether to wait, unwrap or soak your particular block. Keep those instructions beside your kit.
The Nature Lion boxed oyster, chestnut and Lion’s Mane opening method is not a shiitake procedure. Don’t cut or scrape a shiitake block using that method.
- A wrapped sawdust block may still need to mature; a white block and a brown, ready-to-start block can require different next steps.
- A wooden log is a separate format. Look for the species label and supplied log-care instructions before soaking it.
- If the packaging does not say whether it is ready to start, send the seller a photo of the label and the whole block.

Once small mushrooms appear
Leave them attached and avoid knocking them off when handling the block or cover. Follow your kit’s moisture and ventilation routine and check the caps daily as they expand. If something stalls, send its supplier a photo and your start date.

When and how to pick
Look for opened, firm caps with edges still curved underneath. Support each mushroom and cut its stem close to the block with a clean knife. Harvest the ready mushrooms individually as others continue growing. Ask the supplier about resting and restarting the block for another crop.
