Species-specific harvest cues

When to Harvest a Mushroom Grow Kit

Harvest timing is based on the fruit body's development, not merely the number of days since opening. Check fast-growing mushrooms at least daily as they approach maturity and record the harvest before cooking or storage.

Keep the whole grow together

Save the first photo now, then add another entry when the stage or condition changes.

01

Read the fruit body

Oyster clusters are commonly harvested while cap margins remain slightly rolled or have just begun to flatten, before heavy spore release. Lion's Mane is commonly harvested when distinct teeth have developed and the fruit remains firm and pale rather than yellowing or softening. Shiitake are often picked as caps expand while the margin retains some curl. Use the species guide and the kit's supplied information for strain-specific context.

02

Harvest cleanly and record yield

Support the cluster and remove it cleanly without tearing a large cavity from the block. Trim substrate debris, weigh the harvest if useful, photograph it, and refrigerate promptly in breathable packaging appropriate to the species.

  • Record harvest date and flush number
  • Weigh the full and saleable harvest separately when tracking production
  • Note premature drying, heavy spore release, insects, or damaged tissue
  • Clean remaining loose tissue from the fruiting opening without excavating the block

03

Prepare for another flush

Resting and rehydration requirements vary by species and kit design. Use the existing flush guide rather than assuming every block should be submerged.
