First-day checklist
Mushroom Grow Kit Setup: First-Day Guide
Do not begin by cutting or soaking automatically. First identify whether the kit is a ready-to-fruit block, top-fruiting bag, outdoor log kit, inoculation kit, or another format. Then compare the product label and supplied directions with the condition that actually arrived.
Keep the whole grow together
Save the first photo now, then add another entry when the stage or condition changes.

Before opening
Photograph all sides through the packaging. Record the arrival date, species, optional brand/model, visible moisture, discoloration, damage, premature mushrooms, and whether the block feels intact. Keep packaging and order information while warranty questions are unresolved.
- Confirm the species and kit format
- Check storage or activation wording supplied with the kit
- Record damage, dryness, loose substrate, odour through sealed packaging, or premature fruiting
- Choose a clean location away from direct sun, heaters, and strong drafts
02
Choose the correct opening method
Side-fruiting species often fruit from a controlled opening, while other kits are intended to fruit from the top or after a different preparation stage. An outdoor log-inoculation kit may not contain a colonized fruiting block at all. If the format is uncertain, record it as unknown and avoid irreversible changes until it is identified.
03
Establish the baseline
After the correct activation step, add one clear image and note placement, approximate room temperature, indirect-light pattern, and surface condition. This becomes the reference for later changes in moisture, colour, pins, or fruit-body shape.
