Safety-first visual triage
Mold or Mycelium? Grow Kit Identification
One photograph rarely proves what an organism is. Treat a rapidly spreading patch, strong unpleasant odour, wet decay, or coloured sporulation cautiously. Keep the container closed, separate it from other grows, and preserve a dated image before handling it further.
Keep the whole grow together
Save the first photo now, then add another entry when the stage or condition changes.
Record a suspicious change01
Record observations, not conclusions
Describe colour, texture, location, approximate size, speed of change, odour detectable without unsafe opening, stage, recent handling, and whether the mark transfers or spreads. White growth can be healthy mycelium, another fungus, or early contamination; yellow or amber droplets may be metabolites but still deserve context.
- Do not open a suspected sporulating contaminant in the grow area
- Do not taste questionable mushrooms
- Keep the kit away from children, pets, food preparation, and other grows
- Use supplier support or local expertise when disposal or replacement is uncertain

Use the specialised field guides
The kit page provides triage, while the linked references cover broader contaminant patterns, common look-alikes, and green mould in more detail.
03
Track change over time
If it is safe to leave the sealed kit isolated, repeat a photograph from the same angle later. Growth rate and colour development can be more informative than a single moment. Dr. MycoTek records the timeline; it does not guarantee identification or safety.
Your grow becomes more useful over time
Add the first photo before the next change.
Dr. MycoTek keeps your kit, species, stage, photographs, observations, interventions, and harvest history in one web-based record.
