Bulk Organic Millet Grain - 20 lbs for Mushroom Spawn Production

This 20 lb bag of certified organic millet grain is for growers who have sterilization equipment and want to produce mushroom spawn at the lowest possible cost per pound. Millet is preferred by many spawn producers for its small kernel size, which creates more inoculation points per bag and leads to faster substrate colonization. This is raw, unprocessed grain that requires washing, hydrating, and pressure sterilizing before use. Canadian sourced.

Why Millet for Spawn Production

Millet grain has several advantages over rye, wheat, and corn for mushroom spawn production. The small kernel size means more individual grains per pound, which translates to more points of contact when you mix spawn into your substrate. More contact points mean faster and more complete colonization. Millet also resists clumping better than rye and is less prone to bursting during sterilization when properly hydrated.

How to Prepare

Wash and soak

Rinse the millet thoroughly to remove dust and debris. Soak in water for 12-24 hours, then drain completely. The grain should be hydrated but not waterlogged. Surface moisture should be minimal to prevent bacterial contamination.

Load and sterilize

Fill autoclavable mushroom grow bags or mason jars with the prepared grain. Leave headspace for expansion. Sterilize at 15 PSI for 90 minutes. Allow to cool completely in the sterilizer (8-12 hours).

Inoculate

Working in front of a laminar flow hood or inside a still air box, inoculate with liquid culture, agar wedge, or grain-to-grain transfer from an existing spawn bag.

Colonize and use

Incubate at 20-24 C. Shake bags at 30% colonization to redistribute mycelium. Full colonization takes 2-3 weeks. Use finished spawn to inoculate substrate blocks, outdoor beds, or expand your spawn supply through grain-to-grain transfers.

Who Is This For

This product is for growers who already own a pressure cooker or autoclave and want to produce spawn at the lowest cost. If you do not have sterilization equipment or prefer the convenience of ready-to-use grain, see our sterilized organic millet grain bags which arrive pre-sterilized and ready for inoculation.

For commercial spawn producers, buying grain in bulk and sterilizing in-house offers significant savings at scale. This 20 lb bag provides enough grain for 6-8 spawn bags, which in turn can inoculate 120-280 lbs of substrate depending on your spawn ratio.

Canadian sourced organic millet. Ships free across Canada from Brantford, Ontario.
