If you've been searching for the best mushroom grow kits in Canada, you've probably noticed something: there are a lot of options now. From small family farms to companies with Costco distribution, the Canadian mushroom growing market has exploded in the past few years.
But not all kits are created equal. Block size, species selection, genetics quality, and shipping logistics all vary wildly between brands. Some kits arrive ready to fruit in days. Others sit in transit too long and arrive contaminated. And the price difference between a $20 kit and a $40 kit often comes down to things you can't see on the product page — like whether the spawn was produced in-house or resold from a third party.
We've tested, compared, and — full disclosure — produce our own grow kits at Nature Lion. But this guide is written to be genuinely useful whether you buy from us or not. Here's what we found.
What Makes a Great Mushroom Grow Kit?
Before comparing brands, it helps to know what separates a good kit from a mediocre one. Here are the five things that matter most:
Block size. Bigger blocks produce more mushrooms over more flushes. A 2 lb kit might give you one small harvest. A 4+ lb kit can produce 2-3 full harvests over several weeks. Look for kits that weigh at least 3 lbs.
Species and genetics. Not all Lion's Mane strains perform the same. Kits produced from lab-isolated genetics fruit more reliably than those grown from multispore cultures. Ask the supplier if they isolate their own strains.
Humidity management. Mushrooms need 80-90% humidity to fruit properly. The best kits include a humidity tent, spray bottle, or clear instructions on creating a fruiting environment. Without humidity control, your kit dries out before it produces anything.
Shipping and packaging. Live mycelium doesn't like sitting in a hot delivery truck. Canadian suppliers have an advantage here — shorter transit times mean fresher kits. Look for companies that ship with insulation in summer and avoid shipping on Fridays (so your kit doesn't sit in a warehouse over the weekend).
Certifications. CFIA licensing (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) means the facility meets federal food safety standards. Not all kit producers have this — it requires regular inspections and documented protocols.

Best Mushroom Grow Kit for Beginners
If you've never grown a mushroom before, start with a Lion's Mane kit. Here's why:
Lion's Mane is the most forgiving gourmet species for beginners. It tolerates a wider range of humidity and temperature than most oyster varieties. It produces a single, dramatic cluster of cascading white spines that's impossible to miss — you'll know exactly when to harvest. And the flavour is exceptional — often compared to lobster or crab when seared in butter.
Our Lion's Mane Grow Kit is our best-selling kit for exactly this reason. It arrives fully colonized and typically begins fruiting within 7-14 days of opening.

If you want variety, Blue Oyster is the next-easiest species. It's faster and more aggressive than Lion's Mane, but requires slightly higher humidity. Read our full guide to growing Lion's Mane for detailed instructions.
Best Lion's Mane Grow Kit in Canada
For Lion's Mane specifically, Nature Lion and Grow Mushrooms Canada both offer strong options. Nature Lion's advantage is lab-isolated genetics — our Lion's Mane strain has been selected over multiple generations for dense tooth formation and reliable fruiting. The 4 lb block size also gives you more biomass for multiple harvests.
If you're in Western Canada, Grow Mushrooms Canada's Lion's Mane kits are a solid choice for shorter shipping times.
Best Value Mushroom Grow Kit
If budget is your primary concern, Happy Caps wins on price at around $27. The trade-off is a smaller block (fewer harvests) and limited species selection.
For the best value per gram of mushrooms harvested, larger kits win. A $36 Nature Lion kit producing 3 harvests of 200-300g each works out to roughly $0.04-0.06 per gram of fresh gourmet mushrooms — far cheaper than buying them at the grocery store ($30-60/lb for fresh Lion's Mane).

How to Use a Mushroom Grow Kit
Every brand's instructions are slightly different, but the process is essentially the same:
Cut an opening. Use a clean knife to cut an X or remove a small section of the bag. This is where your mushrooms will fruit from.
Place in a humid spot. Set the kit somewhere with indirect light and good air circulation. A kitchen counter away from direct sunlight works well. If your kit came with a humidity tent, set it up over the block.
Mist daily. Spray the opening and inside of the humidity tent 2-3 times per day with clean water. The goal is to maintain high humidity without soaking the substrate.
Harvest when ready. Most species are ready to harvest 7-14 days after opening. For Lion's Mane, harvest when the spines are 1-2 cm long and before they start to yellow. For oysters, harvest just before the caps flatten out.
Soak for second flush. After your first harvest, soak the block in cold water for 6-12 hours, drain, and return to fruiting conditions. Most kits produce 2-3 flushes.

What to Do After Your Grow Kit
Once you've successfully grown from a kit, many growers want to start producing their own substrate and spawn. This is where the real hobby begins. You'll need:
- Grain spawn to inoculate your own substrate bags
- Substrate (pre-sterilized hardwood blocks or bulk substrate)
- Grow bags with filter patches
- A pressure cooker for sterilization
Or, if you want to skip the pressure cooker and go straight to scale, our pre-sterilized hardwood substrate blocks arrive ready to inoculate with spawn or liquid culture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are mushroom grow kits worth it?
Yes — especially for beginners. A $30-40 kit produces $20-40 worth of fresh gourmet mushrooms (based on retail pricing for Lion's Mane and oysters in Canada). You also learn the fundamentals of mushroom growing without investing in equipment.
How long does a mushroom grow kit last?
Most kits produce 2-3 harvests (flushes) over 3-6 weeks. After the final flush, the spent substrate can be composted or used in your garden as a soil amendment.
Do mushroom grow kits need sunlight?
No. Mushrooms need indirect ambient light — not direct sunlight. A kitchen counter, shelf, or any room with a window works fine. Avoid placing kits in direct sun, which dries them out.
Can I grow mushrooms in Canada year-round?
Yes. Indoor grow kits work year-round regardless of outdoor temperatures. The ideal fruiting temperature for most species is 15-22°C (59-72°F), which is typical indoor room temperature in Canadian homes.
What's the easiest mushroom to grow from a kit?
Lion's Mane and Blue Oyster are the two easiest species for beginners. Lion's Mane is more forgiving of humidity fluctuations, while Blue Oyster is faster and more visually dramatic. Both reliably fruit from kits within 7-14 days.
